Celebrating New Health Sciences Early College Pathways

Last week, we had the privilege of celebrating something truly transformative for our students and our city: the announcement of new Health Sciences Early College Pathways at Pearl-Cohn and Maplewood High Schools.

These pathways will open doors for students to earn a two-year degree while still in high school—meaning they will graduate not only with their diploma, but also halfway to a bachelor’s degree. Even more exciting, these pathways are designed to lead directly into high-skill, high-wage, high-demand careers in healthcare—doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals who will shape the future of Nashville’s health system. Students will even be able to apply for bachelor’s degree nursing programs as early as the spring of their senior year.

None of this would be possible without the incredible leadership and vision of lead partners Ascension Saint Thomas, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and Nashville State Community College. Together, they are showing us the power of public-private partnerships.

I was deeply inspired by Dr. Adrienne Battle, Superintendent of Metro Nashville Public Schools, who reminded us that “Talent and ambition are distributed evenly across Nashville; we have to make sure that opportunities are as well.” That is exactly what these new pathways represent: creating opportunities for every student to thrive.

Maplewood High School Executive Principal Dr. Sonya Brooks captured the heart of this work when she shared her daily message to students: “I love you, I believe in you, and there’s nothing you can do about that.” Actions speak louder than words—and the partnerships fueling these opportunities bring that sentiment to life.

At Alignment Nashville, we are honored to stand alongside MNPS and our community partners to align resources in ways that ensure every student has the chance to succeed. This announcement is not only about pathways—it’s about possibility. And it’s a powerful reminder that when we come together, we can change the trajectory for students, families, and our entire community.
