Participating Organization Spotlight - Nashville Stand for Children
Mar 20, 2008
Founded in 2001, the Nashville Chapter of Stand for Children advocates for improvements to and funding for programs and services that give children a fair chance in life. Their overarching goal is to ensure that all students in the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools achieve academic success and graduate from high school. This past year, Stand for Children staff and leaders participated in the development of Metro School’s strategic plan, which outlines what the community wants and expects for its schools and provides directions on how the district can meet those expectations.
They are focusing their efforts on increasing graduation rates by enhancing teacher quality and reducing discipline problems in our schools.
At the local level, they are:
1.Working to ensure that teacher pay incentives help bring high quality teachers into hard-to-staff schools and hard-to-staff subjects, such as science and math.
2.Continuing to advocate for more schools to have an alternative program to out-of-school suspension, called Make a Change. Make a Change is an effective approach to help troubled students to get the help they need.
