Barriers to Succeeding our Goals
We asked our small groups to identify up to three key barriers to success for each of their assigned needs. For the purposes of this exercise, we agreed that funding or lack of funding was a "given" barrier for all needs. We have consolidated their lists and realigned the barriers to provide a broader picture of potential obstacles to achieving our six goals.
  • Lack of transportation; understanding importance, child care insurance, user friendly services.
  • Fear/inability to cope; multiple layers to be explored.
  • Lack of school/success/low self esteem.
  • Culture.
  • Fear of working in neighborhoods with poverty
  • Brain info not accessible/clear
  • Message overload/advice overload/misinformation
  • Access to resources for atypically developing child.
  • States that require yearly PE’s rank very high.
  • Selling;/convincing economic value.
  • Development cost vs. value.
  • Interruption to class time.
  • Buy-in of principal, faculty and parents.
  • Sufficient volunteers.
  • Resistance to change.
  • Interest in volunteerism.
  • Apathy.
  • Food preparation time/ability.
  • Religious, cultural & social barriers.
  • Parent involvement/reaching parents.
  • Media proliferation.
  • Peer pressure.
  • Parent feels powerless and fearful — doesn’t want to believe.
  • Social stigma.
  • Hidden injury/secrecy — reporters are hesitant because they may be wrong or do not want to put families
    through the “wringer.”
  • Engage & educate parents to relate & discuss with their children.
  • Lack of role models (appropriate).
  • There is not a common community approach to addressing prevention & education.
  • Youth believe they are invulnerable.
  • Harder to immediately measure.
  • Sometimes youth get into good & bad, and the bad are written off.
  • Background checks.
  • Managed care/TennCare & assigned provider issues.
  • Burnout and over taxing of school staff.
  • Mental health stigma.
  • Families not ready to address issues.
  • Lack of “neighborhood” schools.
  • Time added to exams.
  • Hidden illness — need to look deeper to behaviors and patterns.
  • Securing “buy-in” from ALL community agencies (government, social, etc.).
