Alignment Nashville’s High School A-Team, co-chaired by Angie Adams of PENCIL and Metro Nashville Public Schools Community Superintendent for the Southeast Quadrant Dr. Adrienne Battle, is seeking the support of individuals and organizations a new pilot programs designed to improve student literacy and prepare students for post-secondary success.
The Career Reading Pilot aims to help connect classroom material taught in Glencliff High School’s Academy of Medical Science and Research to real-world work experiences.
To accomplish this goal, the A-Team is seeking professionals in healthcare and similar fields willing to share industry-related texts such as handbooks, articles, magazines and other publications with students during instructional time. The adult volunteers will then lead discussion and answer students’ questions to draw relevance between classroom and career.
“Our High School Academies have benefited tremendously over the past several years from the knowledge and engagement of so many great business partners,” said Angie Adams of PENCIL. “We believe that this Career Reading Pilot is yet another way for that rich mentorship and academic growth to happen.”
Clint Wilson, Principal at Glencliff High School, agrees.
“The opportunity for our students to hear from medical professionals and tie that in to literacy is one more way that we can increase their engagement in what interests them and provide them real- world applications of the skills we are teaching.”
The High School A-Team will hold an informational community meeting at Glencliff High School in late January. To RSVP for the community meeting or learn more about how to help with the pilots, visit alignmentnashville.org/hsliteracy.
